Do you know how you will react, if facing danger?

If you have never driven a car, how do you know if you can actually get it moving and then navigate safely?
If you have never had to fix a flat tire, how do you do it when no one is around and you are stuck in the middle of nowhere?
So how does someone defend themselves or their loved ones, if they have never been in a dangerous situation?
Well, you can learn how to ahead of time so you can be prepared. Or wait and figure it out as you go.
Have you every heard “failing to prepare” vs. “prepare to fail”?

Use Knowledge, Not Fear – Basic Self-defense Skills

Anyone have college-age kids, who could benefit from some basic self-defense skills as well as situational awareness? Well I do, and my daughter has expressed some interest for herself and some of her college bound friends. I think everyone of all ages can gain from learning some new skills.

As it turns out, this is exactly the type of classes I use to teach daily when I had my own martial arts schools. I am planning to offer some of these classes in the near future in our community. If you or your kids are interested in learning what to do when things go badly, I can teach some very valuable life skills.
College (or adulthood) can be a time of anxiety and uncertainty for young adults, as well as parents seeing their kids come into their own. We live in a very different world than when we were young adults, years ago. We see television and movies where everyone seems to know kung fu or have awesome skills, but in reality, most kids (and adults) never learn how to defend themselves these days until after the actual need arises – which unfortunately could be too late. Hiding under a table and waiting for help, isn’t always the best option when an attacker already has their hands around someone’s throat.

Depending upon the interest and feedback I receive from this post, will determine days, times and frequency of the classes. I am thinking at least once a week for 4 weeks in order learn, develop and practice the basic skills. Any cost will be again be determined upon interest, but I’m thinking a donation that will be possibly forwarded to a worthy cause within our immediate community. I have a few in mind already.
As a parent and also a martial artist for almost 40 years, I feel well-equipped to offer some much-needed resources for those caring to learn more.

Moving Qigong – opening & filling the 8 extraordinary vessels

Moving Qigong – opening & filling the 8 extraordinary vessels

What if you could perform exercises pretty much anywhere, at anytime and with no special equipment? And those exercises helped to maintain flexibility and strength throughout your whole body? Oh, and maybe even improve some chronic pain issues and relieve mental stress? These are some of those types of exercises.

These exercises strengthen the muscles, bones, organs and nervous system by performing specific joint alignments along with deep and deliberate breathing methods. This breathing helps change the blood chemistry and has a calming effect on the emotions.

Posture & Symmetry Affect the Body & Mind

Which side do you favor?
Do you have a stronger side?
A weaker side you avoid?
A faster side you use for activities?

Some of the above have to do with your posture and natural symmetry of your body.

These are the type of self-awareness elements that practices like tai chi, qigong and yoga address.

One part moves, all parts move

One part moves, all parts move – is a concept behind tai chi and its forms (exercises).

Movements from the fingers to the toes; the deep and regulated breathing; the deliberate thought that goes into each exercise – these are the factors that make tai chi (and qigong) an all encompassing mind, body and spirit (self-awareness) practice.

When the limbs are moved in specific patterns of exercises, the fascia (connective tissue) is engaged moving muscles throughout the entire body. There is some research showing that the fascia might be the conduit that qi (energy or life force) circulates throughout the individual.
