Stay active, eat quality food and manage emotions and stress – 3 key elements to maintaining good health. And it doesn’t cost a fortune to improve all 3; just time and self-discipline.
Pick a method – walk, run, swim, yoga, tai chi, weight training, qigong, stretch. Each has its pros and cons. JUST PICK ONE and do it consistently.
Consistent exercise helps you:
– Lower risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many other illnesses
– Lose, gain, or maintain weight
– Improve resistance to infections
– Gain high-quality sleep
– Help to balance emotional health
– Prevent and relieve chronic pain
– Exercise increases size of hippocampus and improves memory
– Increase blood and oxygen flow to your brain
– Release accumulated toxins through better blood circulation
– Increase blood flow supplying nutrients necessary to keep brain cells healthy
– Improve your brain function
Tai Chi, yoga and qigong are all methods that increase the flow of energy ( and blood flow) within the body improving health and well-being.

Is Our Health Really a Priority in the US?

Ask any citizen in the US if their health and their family’s is a priority and the response will be something like, “well of course our health is my top priority!” “And we are the healthiest country in the world!” Ehhh…no, not true for both statements based upon data from supposedly reputable news outlets.  View the charts at the bottom.

In reality how many Americans exercise on a regular basis? How many manage their nutrition by monitoring their sugar, salt, trans fat, alcohol, etc. intake? Or what about managing stress and emotional health? Not many.

Americans might say or think that we are very health conscious but the statistics show that we really are not.  The US ranked 35th in the world in 2019 from a report from Bloomberg.  Meanwhile Forbes ranked the US #1 worldwide for the amount of money spent on healthcare in 2018. Made obvious from the data is that investing more money in healthcare, doesn’t make a country or the person healthier.  If someone has great healthcare coverage but eats junk food everyday, doesn’t exercise regularly and has a negative outlook, they will probably experience health issues sooner than later.

Our actions support the facts that we don’t truly put exercise, nutrition and stress as high priorities deserving more action than conversation. Healthy living and habits are a choice, or a mindset that we as Americans as a whole, fail terribly at practicing. True is true.

When the research is done, we can also determine that the leading causes of death in the US are all very much influenced by our diet, our sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise and excessive sitting) and our attitudes towards managing stress or lack thereof. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory issues (all leading causes of death by far) can all be much less if we made it a priority to do so.

Which brings us to another issue.  Our media in the US, love it or hate it, usually focuses mostly on reporting deaths relative to terrorism and homicide. So far this year has been the doom and gloom of Covid19. The media, the government and healthcare leaders fail to promote personal responsibility for the individuals’ own actions and how that can affect on a much broader level the health of our nation. Instead there is a strong focus on wearing masks and social distancing as a way to make an unhealthy nation, somehow immune to disease and illnesses that affect most those that have health issues to begin with.

Even typically healthy people do get sick.  Athletes and health enthusiast can get sick too. Nobody gets a free ride, but why don’t we start to look at the root causes for our health issues, instead of looking to politics or others to blame for our own personal accountability. We are where we are, because of our choices. We need to own this. Blaming others will not make us healthier.

Get moving more, eat healthier foods and try to stress less.  These are the keys to a healthier nation.

The 12 Primary Energy Meridians & The 8 Extraordinary Vessels
Within Chinese Medicine, there exists the theory of the 12 Primary Energy Meridians. Also, there is the Eight Extraordinary Vessels representing the body’s deepest level of energetic structuring. These vessels are the first to form in utero, and are carriers of Yuan Qi – the ancestral energy which corresponds to our genetic inheritance. They function as deep reservoirs from which the twelve main meridians can be replenished and into which the latter can drain their excesses of qi. Other names for these Eight Extraordinary Vessels include: the Eight Curious Vessels, the Eight Marvelous Meridians, and the Eight Irregular Vessels.
Western medicine does not recognize the meridians nor vessels existence as they are not physical components that can be seen nor dissected in a lab environment. However, other types of energy such as electricity, radiation and heat also are not visible to the human eye but are accepted as existing.
The blood, fascia and nervous system are all presumed to be the conduit in which the qi circulates throughout the human body. Mind and body practices such as tai chi, yoga and qigong are all methods of exercise and wellness known to affect the meridians, vessels and qi flow in a positive way. Improving the immune system is just one benefit of increasing this flow of energy.

The Cross Crawl Concept

Opposition or contralateral, in regards to body movement or mechanics, means that opposite sides of the body work together to coordinate the right arm and left leg, and then the left arm and right leg. Ipsilateral refers to same side coordination.

Cross crawl refers to movements in which we use opposition such as walking, climbing, crawling, walking, running, and swimming. These are intentional cross-lateral activities, which you cross the mid-line of the body. Touching the hand to the opposite knee or foot.

This type of movement builds the connection between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This allows for the electrical impulses and information to pass freely between the two hemispheres. This is essential for physical coordination as well as cerebral activities, such as reading, listening, teaching or learning a skill, and hand-eye coordination.

The cross crawl technique is an easy way to activate brain development and the nervous system. It gives motor and sensory stimuli needed to take control of bodily functions, thereby preventing or rehabilitating health problems. Exercises from martial arts such as Tai Chi (kung fu), qigong and yoga focus greatly on contralateral and ipsilateral movements throughout their curriculum.
