Moving Breathing Exercises (qigong) 8 Pieces of Brocade

Moving Breathing Exercises (qigong) 8 Pieces of Brocade
Eight Pieces of Brocade or 8 Sections of Silk, is said to have been composed sometime during the Southern Sung Dynasty of the 12th century by the famous Chinese general, Yueh Fei. Yueh Fei was also known to have created Hsing I, an internal style of martial arts.
The purpose of these exercises was to engage the mind and body in order to balance and strengthen the body’s vital functions, as well as purge stagnant energy and toxins from the body. If practiced as simple physical exercises, one can loosen their muscles, improve posture, increase blood circulation, and relax the body as well as the mind.

I offer these graphics as a way to help remember or study the content that I teach.  It is almost always better to learn in person, but these are great teaching aides.
These are just a few of the exercises I teach in my follow-along and private classes. Group classes have resumed and ongoing for Mondays & Fridays at 11:30am-12:30pm at the Winter Park Presbyterian Church at 400 S. Lakemont Avenue in Winter Park, FL. Private or semi-private classes are held in Longwood (Wekiva), FL.

BaguaZhang (basic exercises)

“Workout” is to exercise to stay healthy with no specific goals.
“Training” is what some do, for a specific goal or performance. Sometimes training is to increase knowledge of a particular skill set.
“Practice is what individuals commit to do, in order to improve, increase or perfect their skills for a specific goal, performance or mastery.
BaguaZhang is an exercise method that can be a workout, training or practice depending upon the goals of the individual.
BaguaZhang exercises consist of:
– gentle stretching
– deep rhythmic breathing
– walking exercises for the lower body and blood circulation
– exercises that have been time-proven over hundreds of years
BaguaZhang translates to 8 Trigram Palm.
The Bagua is an 8-sided shape which can represent harmony and balance. Trigrams are relative to Chinese philosophy from the I-Ching, which has been studied by millions for hundreds of year to learn to exist within balance.

Dynamic Tension – Tai Yu

Dynamic tension – using your own body to create resistance for building strength, flexibility, balance, etc. Watch and follow along this set called Tai Su.

As we all continue to age, the focus should change somewhat from the cosmetic attraction of a lean and toned physique to that of structurally sound and healthy internal systems. Most people don’t ail from weak biceps, or un-toned stomach and chest muscles. It is the health underneath that is most important.

The goal is not to get a strenuous high-impact physical workout, but rather to build strength in all of the muscles, joints, bones, fascia and all other components of the human body. These exercises can be practiced aerobically (moving) to more engage the circulatory system or anaerobically (holding each posture) with deep and deliberate breathing to engage the parasympathetic nervous system.

These exercises have passed the test of time. Yoga/qigong (origins in 3300-1500 BCE), Asian Martial Arts (origins of 4-5 century AD), Tai Chi (origins in 12th century AD).

These practices have endured because they produce results for those that take them seriously.

Tao Yin – Swallow Returns to Nest (moving qigong) detailed instruction

Today’s online exercise: Tao Yin – Swallow Returns to Nest

A side effect of the current pandemic crisis – some people have started to realize that good health is not all about the location, the equipment, the gear, the clothes, the look.

Staying healthy is a state of mind; a matter of choice. What you do or where you do it is not as important as finding a method of exercise that you can do consistently.

The goal here is not to get a strenuous high-impact physical workout, but rather to build strength in all of the muscles, joints, bones, fascia and all other components of the human body. These exercises can be practiced aerobically (moving) to more engage the circulatory system or anaerobically (holding each posture) with deep and deliberate breathing to engage the parasympathetic nervous system.
